Sick Husband

March 30, 2008 at 10:44 am (Just so you know, This is why I got married) (, , )

Well, maybe not sick, but slightly broken.  Tony has had allergy/sinus/general nose problems since he was young.  After going to doctor upon doctor and being given decongestants that don’t really work for YEARS, he finally demanded to be sent to a specialist.  So he was.

We got in to see the ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) doc last week.  He diagnosed Tony with a crooked septum and possible sleep apnea.  He wants to do a sleep study, so we’re waiting on approval for that.  He put Tony on a 6 medication protocol for 6 weeks to clear up anything in there.  Then he wants to get a CT scan done and go from there.  I have no idea when he plans on correcting the crooked septum, but we should find out soon.

This is such great news for Tony.  If you’ve ever heard him blow his nose, you understand.  He’s constantly sniffling all over the place.  If we can do something to fix this permanently, that would rock.  I’ve always felt bad that he has to suffer through this.

In other Tony’s broken and we’re trying to fix him news, he may possibly be getting Lasik!  He has to go in for a screening tomorrow and the scheduling is a pain.  The Navy says we need to be here for 12-18 months for him to qualify and we’re only here for 15 months.  I’m hoping he can get it done before we leave since this is probably his last chance at it for a long time.

Hopefully soon Tony’ll be able to smell and see better!

Sick baby

March 29, 2008 at 10:46 pm (Eliana cuteness, Parenting is hard) (, , )

Eliana had a very persistent fever last week. Well, persistent for her. On day three of the never-ending fever, we took her to the doctor. The doctor was great. He was compassionate, and understanding, and not at all pushy. He checked her ears and made her cry, checked her throat and made her cry. Both checked out fine. He decided we should do some blood work and get a urine sample (to rule out a bladder infection). Tony had to go help out a friend, so I was left alone with the baby and the people who wanted to make her cry. After the ears and throat crying, Eliana fell asleep on my chest while we waited for the rest.

After about 20 minutes, the needle lady came. She was so nice and seemed like she knew what she was doing, even though she couldn’t have been older than 12. Moving her to the table woke her up, but that was inevitable anyway. The needle lady tied the rubber band thing and took 2 vials of blood. I cried the entire time.

I can handle shots. I don’t get all weepy just because Eliana cries. She’s a baby. Sometimes they cry. I’m ok with this and it normally doesn’t affect me that much. But the anticipation of the needle and the catheter for the 30 minutes I waited for them to happen was just too much. I cried.

I had no sooner wiped my eyes before the 2 catheter ladies came in. One to insert, one to hold her legs and me to hold her arms and look into her eyes while she stares accusingly at me wondering why the woman who is supposed to love her more than anything is letting these strangers cause her pain. Thankfully it didn’t take long. It wasn’t the catheter that bothered her so much as the being held down.

They put us in a different room to wait for the results. The whole time we were in there she smiled and laughed and played and was back to her old self. It helped that they gave her Motrin when we first got there and it had fully kicked in and demolished her 102.4 degree fever. I’d have been feeling good too. Tony got back while we were waiting.

That was good cuz I had to pee.

The doc came back just after with the results.

Side note: How awesome is it that we got the results about 30 minutes after they did the tests? I don’t know any other place that works as efficiently and I wish this was her regular pedi. But, no. Her regular pedi couldn’t get us in, so we were sent to this other place that is so AWESOME. I hope her regular pedi can’t get her in next time too.

Back to the results. Everything was fine. Her WBC count was low? or high? I don’t remember, whatever the good one is. And her viral fighting something was low? or high? I should pay better attention. Anyway he said she has a virus and we have to treat the symptoms. Which is fever. So Motrin. Which is what we’d been doing. Only we did that before the blood draws and catheter and ears and throat and making her cry. Glad I put her through all that to be told “Keep doing what you’re doing.”

The next day there was no fever. How ya like that?

Here, have a broken heart:

Extra side note: Eliana weighed 16lbs 14oz and was 28 inches long. She has now officially doubled her birth weight!! Yay!

Eliana Tuesday #1

March 25, 2008 at 3:57 pm (Eliana Tuesday, Eliana cuteness, Parenting is hard) (, )

8 months, 1 week, and 1 day old
I have been less than the awesome blogger lately and I kinda feel bad about it. I know I need to just sit here and type something up, but then I’m all “eh” about it. I don’t know if there’s just nothing going on around here (not that that has ever stopped me before) or what. I just feel really unmotivated.

So I was thinking I could post every Tuesday about Eliana’s weekly whatever. Ok, mostly pictures from the week. It gives me a solid posting topic with no thought required and I’ll have something to look back on as she gets older or compare pics when we have #2 (whenever that is). I picked Tuesday cuz there’s really no day that sounds good with Eliana and she was born on a Tuesday. So there you have it.

Eliana’s been sick for the last couple of days. No congestion or anything, just a fever that won’t quit. She’s been really clingy and cuddly and lethargic. She only wants mommy and who am I to deny her? We’ve spent a lot of time snuggled up on the couch or on the floor or in the chair. It’s kinda nice, actually. She’s not normally the snuggly type. And now she’s finally napping, so I will too. Screw the dishes.

But also, what the hell am I supposed to do with her hair? It’s too fine to put up and it looks boyish without a headband. I’m thinking of cutting it since it gets in her eyes. But I don’t really want to cut it. Any suggestions?

I’m married to an old geezer

March 20, 2008 at 10:11 pm (Funny Family, This is why I got married) (, )

Tony turned 29 today! Happy birthday Tony!!!

We didn’t do anything terribly exciting. We never made any plans and after a morning of “What do you wanna do?” “I dunno, what do you wanna do?”, we went in search of a stroller for Eliana. We’re a couple a wild ones. Didn’t find the stroller, but it killed some time. Tony looked around at his favorite store and I didn’t rush him at all. He didn’t buy anything, so. Yeah. We’re so boring.

But we went to dinner at Outback. The steak was so yummy! But the potatoes kinda sucked. Eliana behaved herself despite having her nap interrupted (noisy neighbors). She started getting tired and fussy, but I made weird sounds and she laughed at me for a good 20 minutes. The child was delirious. I made the wait staff sing happy birthday to Tony (of course) and he got a free dessert that he shared with me.

I got him an xbox game and a card from me and one from Eliana. The card from me was awesome. Best card ever! Someone should buy this card for my birthday. And then I would love them always always and frame the card and hang it on the wall. I love it so much, I took pictures.

See? Hilarious!

I also made a homemade from scratch birthday cake. Did I mention from scratch? Even the frosting was made by yours truly. Look at me. Being all domestic. It was so yummy! Tony went back for seconds. I gotta say, I’m pretty proud of my cake.

8 Months Old

March 17, 2008 at 11:42 pm (Eliana cuteness, Parenting is hard, Shameless Bragging) (, , , )

I guess this month has been the Month Of Movement. Eliana started crawling and pulling herself up and is pretty close to standing on her own. Everyday I am amazed by what she can do. It won’t be too long before she’s walking (and running). Keeping up with her is harder than I thought it’d be. I mean, how fast can a baby move? The answer is 75mph.

She’s got 7 teeth now. After I bitched whined complained spoke about her eating issues, she got better at it. As long as I offer lots of things, she eats well. I think she just gets bored with pureed stuff. Bottles are hit or miss lately. I think that bothers me more than the solids thing. I can’t wait till she’s off formula and on all solids. I think I’ll be less stressed then. Yes, I live in a fantasy world. Please do not burst my bubble. We’re also working on drinking from a sippy cup. She doesn’t really get it yet, but we’ve got time.

She’s still doing her normal babble thing. I think she said “banana” a couple of times. I’m not counting it as a first word yet, since I’m not sure. She says a lot of “dadadada” and a little “mamamama”. I think that’s funny since she’s been preferring me lately. She waves bye bye, but only sometimes. It’s pretty cute though. She’s not clapping yet, but we’re working on it. I’m also trying to teach her to blow kisses since how cute would that be? She likes when I do it, but so far monkey see, monkey does not do.

We paid a visit to the Easter bunny. I thought she’d surely cry her little eyes out since she’s all about the stranger anxiety lately. But apparently bunnies are immune. She managed a pretty cute smile. It would have been better had she looked at the camera, but whatever. I’m just glad she wasn’t screaming.

I feel a lot more relaxed about things. I’m not worried about her development (today) or even her eating habits. I can only do so much. Everything else is up to her and I just have to be patient and wait for it. Height and weight stats will have to wait until after her 9 month check-up. I measured her today and she was about 28″ long. I think she weighs 16 lbs. Tony says 17. Either way.

You sit right there, I’m gonna be a big girl and maybe make you cry.

I’m thinking maybe eggs.

March 7, 2008 at 8:34 am (All me, Eliana cuteness, Funny Family, Just so you know, Parenting is hard, Shameless Bragging, This is why I got married) (, , , , )

It’s been a while since I’ve done a bullet post, so here:

  • Boys suck. Why do we even have conversations if they’re not going to listen and just do what they want anyway? I don’t even want to get into it because it just makes me mad and I can’t even resolve it until this afternoon (if it ever gets resolved!) (I might be over-dramatic about it). And I hate going to bed angry. I’ve done it exactly twice since we’ve known each other and both times have been since Eliana was born. Parents of infants pick sleep over conflict resolution any day. Pre-baby I would never have fallen asleep.
  • How many cable men does it take to hook up an HD cable box? I’ll let you know after #3 gets here. The first guy left it making snapping pop sounds and I swear I thought the whole thing was gonna explode. The second guy left it perfectly perfect, but 2 hours later it stopped working. Today we have contestant #3. Let’s see how he fares, shall we?
  • Eliana pulled herself up to a stand for the first time in her crib on 3/3/08. I’ve known it was coming, so I’d been keeping a closer eye on the video monitor. I saw her doing it and yelled to Tony. He ran back to, you know, stop her from falling and breaking her head. I yelled “Stop!” just before he opened her door and I grabbed my camera. My priorities may be slightly askew. However, she didn’t fall and I got pictures of a first.

  • Used to be when Eliana did something new she’d do it a couple times, get bored, and quit for a few months. Not standing. It is far too awesome. She has to pull herself up on everything. It makes me very tired.
  • Yesterday I checked the weather and it said it was 70 degrees. 2 hours later it was 47. Right now it’s 41. I don’t like hot weather, so this makes me happy.
  • My house is cleaner than it’s been in weeks. Don’t get me wrong, it’s never gross or anything. But right now it looks better than usual. Still have some stuff to take care of, but it won’t take long. I always feel a sense of accomplishment when the house looks good. You’d think that would be motivation for me to keep it looking this way longer. But I don’t.
  • My 2 sisters (possibly 2, but at least 1) and my nephew are coming to visit in May. I am so excited!! I honestly never thought my sis would make it since she has a crazy 5 year old boy. She also works and goes to school full time. She’ll be getting her degree soon and I’m so proud of her. She’s come a long way. I can’t wait to see her!!! The other sis is in the Navy and doesn’t know if her leave is approved yet. We should find out soon though. Is it May yet?
  • I’m hungry. Seems like a good way to end this post.
